The Revised European Framework for Safe and Sustainable by Design Chemicals and Materials
Horizon Europe SUNRISE project is at the forefront of developing SSbD knowledge and tools inline with the SSbD Framework. Building on the foundational work of its predecessor, the H2020 SUNSHINE project, several of our peer reviewed publications have been referenced in the Revised Framework in key refined areas. These include contributions to a better understanding of the strategic link between the innovation process and SSbD goals and identifying relevant socio-economic categories and aspects to be considered in a sound and more comprehensive socio-economic assessment.
You can access the referenced peer reviewed publications here:

SSbD Framework 2026: What the Revised Safe and Sustainable by Design Recommendation Means for Your Business
Readiness is not a compliance exercise. It is a strategic decision.
The adoption of the Commission Recommendation of the Revised SSbD Framework on 6 March 2026 is a significant moment in the evolution of EU chemicals and materials regulation. The changes it introduces are substantive, the direction it signals is clear, and the window for comfortable, well-resourced preparation is narrowing.
The SUNRISE project established a commanding presence at the ANTHOS'26 event in Vienna, actively steering the conversation around operationalizing the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework for advanced materials. Through collaborative workshops, strategic meetings, and hands-on demonstrations, the SUNRISE team showcased its core methodologies and digital tools designed to make sustainable industry a practical reality.
SUNRISE convened at the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao (Spain) from April 21 to April 23 for the SUNRISE Annual Meeting 2026. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, the three-day summit successfully fostered deep collaboration across the consortium to advance the Integrated Impact Assessment Approach (IIAA) and align it with the EU's Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework.
We are thrilled to announce that Vicenç Pomar Portillo (EMPA) was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Award at the Nanomaterials 2026 Conference in Barcelona!
Vicenç presented his work on "Methods and Tools for the Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials," a pivotal topic in ensuring the responsible and SSbD development of nanotechnology. This research is directly linked to the work coming out of SUNRISE Project’s WP2, specifically building on the publication released late last year in Environment International.
This recognition underscores the importance of the SUNRISE project’s mission to refine safety assessment frameworks. Congratulations, Vicenç, on this well-deserved achievement!
SUNRISE at theCheMatSustainStakeholder Event in Valencia (11 June 2026)
Our brilliant delegation,Danail Hristozov,Stella Stoycheva, andCarlos Fito, stepped up to represent our vision during the event's high-level roundtable discussions. The team brought a dynamic mix of insights to the debate: Stella Stoycheva drove crucial conversations around the social pillars of SSbD, unpacking what these frameworks actually mean for industryadoption and societal impact. Danail Hristozov and Carlos Fito actively steered the technical and collaborative dialogue, showcasing how SUNRISE methodologies bridge the gap between complex data and practical, SSbDmaterial creation.AIwas part of the conversation, too.
Many thanks to the CheMatSustain team for hosting this fruitful platform!
Thieme Cheminar: Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD): Advancing Innovation in Chemicals and Materials
The recording is available online.
Lya G. Soeteman-Hernandez was a featured speaker at the Thieme Cheminar on May 6 at 14:00 (CEST). The session, titled "Safe and Sustainable by Design (hashtag#SSbD): Advancing Innovation in Chemicals and Materials".
Lya's talk is based on a recent article she co-authored with many other SUNRISE partners, including the first author Stella Stoycheva, in the Sustainability & Circularity NOW journal (2025, 2a). This research was co-funded by the h2020 SUNSHINE project, the predecessor to the SUNRISE.
