AlChemiSSts's first newsletter

AlChemiSSts stands for "Alternative Chemicals and Materials integrating Safety, Sustainability, new Production technologies and Socio-economic aspects." The project, funded by Horizon Europe, started in November 2024 and will run for four years. It focuses on demonstrating the practical application of the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework through 10 work packages. These address areas such as technical development, digital tools, sustainability, and socio-economic impact. 

Kickoff Meeting in Valencia, Spain

AlChemiSSts officially launched with a successful kickoff meeting on December 2–3, 2024 in Valencia, bringing together representatives from all 25 partner organizations.

Key highlights:

• A detailed walkthrough of each Work Package

• Collaborative discussions on digitalization, materials innovation, and process optimization

• Team-building sessions that strengthened our shared vision and commitment

The meeting set a strong foundation for interdisciplinary collaboration and laid out a clear roadmap for the journey ahead.

Work Package Updates

🧪 WP1 – Setting the Stage for SSbD Substitution

Led by National Technical University of Athens / R-NanoLab, WP1 has completed a comprehensive assessment of technical specifications and manufacturing practices relevant to replacing SVHCs. This included:

• Industry surveys and stakeholder engagement

• Definition of key performance indicators (KPIs) and sustainability metrics

• Identification of challenges in real-world substitutions

🔥 WP3 – Advancing Flame Retardants Development

Led by Avanzare, WP3 has kicked off with strategic meetings and planning sessions involving use case leaders. Over the coming months:

• Avanzare will develop new flame-retardant additives in their labs

• These additives will undergo preliminary fire testing

• Focus use cases include firefighter shoe soles, insulation foams, and battery case components
